Nuclear talks with Iran, Khamenei: US with scandalous demands, I don't

Excessive and scandalous. This is what Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called US demands that Tehran give up uranium enrichment. He cast doubt on the possibility of an agreement between Washington and Iran regarding its nuclear program, writes A2 CNN. Speaking at a memorial ceremony for the late President, Ebrahim Raisi, Khamenei said that negotiations had not produced results during the previous presidency and that they are not expected to produce results now either.

"The American side that is participating in these indirect talks should try not to talk nonsense. Saying that we will not allow Iran to enrich uranium is very exaggerated. No one is asking for their permission," he said.

Although there are expectations that a fifth round of negotiations could take place over the weekend in Rome, the nuclear talks are being held on shaky ground, as both Iran and the US have clashed sharply over the issue of uranium enrichment.

Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said on Monday that talks would fail if Washington insisted that Tehran refrain from domestic uranium enrichment, which the US says could be used to develop nuclear bombs.

Tehran, for its part, insists that its nuclear energy program has entirely peaceful purposes and has expressed a willingness to limit, to some extent, the level of enrichment.

Another Iranian official said they had recently accepted and were considering a U.S. proposal. Last week, President Trump warned that the Islamic country had to act quickly or “something bad will happen.” He has threatened military intervention if a compromise is not reached. (A2 Televizion)
