The European Union has adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. The 17th package of punitive measures includes, among other things, a further tightening of measures against the so-called Russian shadow fleet for the transport of oil and oil products as well as the suppression of hybrid threats. The news was announced in X, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
"The EU has adopted its 17th package of sanctions against Russia, targeting nearly 200 ships of the Russian shadow fleet. More sanctions against Russia are being considered. The longer Russia wages war, the tougher our response," she said, A2 CNN reports.
She also noted that an 18th package of sanctions is already being planned. Among other things, it aims to prevent the resumption of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. In addition, a reduction in the maximum price for Russian oil and further sanctions against the Russian financial sector and against ships of the Russian shadow fleet are planned.
The European Union and its Western allies are progressively cracking down on Russia's tanker fleet and the companies that produce them, which are trying to circumvent the Group of Seven's price cap on Russian crude oil from the end of 2022. According to Kallas, the current sanctions package will prevent around 200 additional ships from entering EU ports. Likewise, operators will no longer be able to benefit from services offered by European companies. Around 30 economic actors will be affected by the new export restrictions. Dozens of other individuals and companies will no longer be allowed to do business in the EU and also have to fear asset freezes.
The reason for the rapid pace of action is that peace efforts in Ukraine have recently failed to yield tangible results and Western demands for an immediate ceasefire have not been met. (A2 Televizion)
