A massive power outage affects all of Spain: Red Elétrica activates an emergency plan to restore electricity.
Power has been cut across the country. Minister of Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, visits the Red Eléctrica control center.
Spain and Portugal have suffered a total blackout, with electricity cut off in all regions of the two Iberian peninsular countries. According to Spanish media outlet El Mundo, areas of southern France have also been affected by the blackout, as their electrical systems are interconnected with the Spanish one.
Telephone lines have been cut across the country, plunging airports, railways, hospitals and all institutions into chaos.
Sources from the Ministry of Ecological Transition indicate that Vice President Sara Aagesen has traveled to the Red Electrica control center to learn about the situation and closely monitor the incident that has plunged Spain into darkness.
"All necessary measures will be taken to return to normality as soon as possible," she said.
Red Eléctrica has announced that it has activated plans to restore electricity supplies and stated that the reason for the power outage was a strike across the peninsula.
"The causes are being analyzed and all resources are being dedicated to its solution," the system operator explained.
There are many reasons why such a blackout can occur. One of them is that there may be a peak in demand that the system is not able to cover, although this is not common, since Red Eléctrica compensates the network at all times to keep it in balance and activates or deactivates (excessive generation can also crash the system) generation sources depending on the needs. In this sense, they can also disconnect electro-intensive industries to prevent them from pressurizing the system.
Spain's main electricity companies still have no information on the causes of the power shortage. (A2 Televizion)
