Kremlin: Ukraine must start direct peace talks

Russia has said it is waiting for a signal from Ukraine to begin direct negotiations to end the war.

According to foreign media, when asked whether Ukraine should be the one to initiate direct talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that the 'ball' is in Kiev's court.

"At least Kiev should take some action in this direction," he said, before going on to add "so far we see no action."

The Kremlin said last week that the prospect of holding direct talks with Kiev had been raised in a three-hour meeting between Vladimir Putin and Steve Witkoff, writes A2 CNN.

Moscow and Kiev have not held direct talks since March 2022 in the weeks after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy passed a decree later that year ruling out negotiations with Putin, with the US leading separate talks with each side. (A2 Televizion)
