Reuters reported on Wednesday that Syria's new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, has demanded that Russia hand over former President Bashar Al-Assad and his aides.
The request was reportedly made during a meeting the latter held in Damascus with a Russian delegation during their official visit there. Part of the delegation was Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who is also Putin's special envoy for the Middle East and Africa, as well as Alexander Lavrentyev, Putin's special envoy for Syria, writes A2 CNN.
Kremlin spokesman Dimitry Peskov declined to comment on whether this request had been made to the Russian side, but said Moscow seeks to maintain good relations with the new Syrian administration and secure the future of its military bases there.
Since being ousted from power late last year, Assad and his family have settled in Moscow. (A2 Televizion)
