Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for the criminal offenses of "public insult" and "threat" by a Turkish court this Wednesday.
Despite the prison sentence, Imamoglu escaped restrictions on his political activity, and was also acquitted of charges of " targeting individuals who have served in the fight against terrorism ."
Specifically, Imamoglu was sentenced to one year, 5 months and 15 days in prison for " public insult of a public official " and two months and 15 days for " threats ."
It is worth noting that he faced a maximum prison sentence of 7 years and four months. The prosecution's investigation against him in this case was ordered on January 20 for statements he made in a television interview regarding the head of the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office, Akin Gürlek, and his family.
The hearing took place at the 14th Istanbul High Criminal Court, located on the Marmara Prison campus, and lasted approximately 45 minutes.
Former Deputy Justice Minister Akin Gurlek, first as a judge and then as a prosecutor, played a significant role in major trials involving prosecutions of opposition figures, including the conviction of the pro-Kurdish People's Justice Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas, and the prosecutions of Mayor Imamoglu and CHP mayors in Istanbul's regional municipalities.
