A foreign tanker has been seized by Iran in the Gulf of Oman for smuggling 2 million liters of fuel. The seizure was announced on Monday by the head of the judiciary in Hormozgan province, according to Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency.
"During the ongoing process of monitoring suspicious fuel smuggling movements in the Gulf of Oman, officers inspected a foreign tanker because it did not have legal documents for its cargo and detained it on charges of transporting 2 million liters of smuggled fuel," said Mojtaba Ghahramani, head of the judiciary in Hormozgan.
The judicial official added that 17 crew members, including the captain, were arrested and that a file has been opened at the Jask District Prosecutor's Office.
According to Ghahrmani, authorities are continuing to collect evidence, as well as verify documents, check the fuel, and confirm the volume of the cargo, while the Iranian judiciary plans to announce the results of the investigation once it is completed.
So far, there is no information on the tanker's name, its flag or its destination. (A2 Televizion)
