The European Union has offered the United States a deal to mutually eliminate all tariffs on industrial goods. Despite US President Donald Trump's tariff decisions, the European Union is ready to negotiate, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference in Brussels.
"It is very clear that we are open to negotiations. We are preparing a potential list of new measures if this is necessary. We prefer to have a negotiated solution. The relevant partners and the commissioners together with their American counterparts are in constant contact on this issue. It is very clear that the negotiations need to go deep into technical details, so this needs to be resolved first, then the other steps come," said Von der Leyen.
According to international media reports, Von der Leyen's offer was made before Trump's tariff decisions, but was recently reiterated again on Friday. The offer remains on the table, Von der Leyen said. She added that the topic of free trade for cars has already been on the table several times, but there has been no adequate response.
Von der Leyen made it clear that in addition to negotiating efforts, possible countermeasures would be prepared in case the negotiations failed. In addition, they would also be protected from the effects of possible redirection of trade flows from other parts of the world through US import tariffs.
To this end, an “import monitoring task force” will be established. It will work with industry to ensure that there is solid evidence for the policies to work.
Before the Commission President's comments, US presidential adviser Elon Musk spoke out over the weekend in favour of a tariff-free transatlantic free trade area. He hopes the US and Europe can agree on an even closer partnership than before, the head of electric car maker Tesla said. (A2 Televizion)
