Israel's main airport in Tel Aviv was hit by rockets fired from Yemen. The Israeli military said fragments of the shells had fallen at Ben Gurion Airport, with Houthi rebels the main suspect.

Journalists on the ground reported several explosions at the airport and in Jerusalem. The Israeli police bomb disposal unit reported that a "munition fragment" had hit the area around the airport, A2 reports.

Air raid sirens were heard in several Israeli regions; the military said air defenses had attempted to intercept a missile fired from Yemen. Israeli health authorities said eight people were injured.

Israel has threatened a counterattack that is said to be many times stronger. “Whoever attacks us, we will retaliate sevenfold,” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said, quoting the Bible. The military itself had recently halted attacks on targets in Yemen — apparently in coordination with the US, whose military has been continuously bombing Houthi militia targets for nearly two months.

The Iran-backed Houthi militia controls large parts of Yemen. Along with Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, it is part of the Iranian-led "Axis of Resistance" directed against Israel and the United States. Their stated goal is the destruction of Israel.

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as targets in Israel with drones and missiles - according to their statements "in solidarity with the Palestinians" in the Gaza Strip. (A2 Televizion)
