Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States

President-elect Donald Trump has just been sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States," Trump said in his oath.

The Presidential Oath is specified in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution. Oaths for other federal officers, including the vice president, are not in the Constitution. Congress created those oaths by statute.

The words “so help me God” do not appear in the Constitutional oath. This phrase was supposedly uttered by George Washington at his first inauguration, thus setting a precedent for future presidents. However, there is no concrete historical evidence that Washington did so.

Franklin Pierce and Herbert Hoover chose to "affirm" rather than "swear" their oaths.

The swearing-in ceremony is taking place in the Capitol Rotunda due to the cold temperatures outside.

He used two Bibles during his inauguration; the Abraham Lincoln Bible that Lincoln used during his inauguration ceremony in 1861 and his personal Bible.
