Several European Union countries have signaled they want to reach a quick deal with the US to avoid Donald Trump's threat of 50% tariffs on the union, urging the European Commission to continue talking to Washington instead of pursuing a confrontational path.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held an emergency phone call with Trump hours after the US president made his threat on Friday, Italian officials told the Financial Times.
They added that Meloni then spoke to commission president Ursula von der Leyen, urging her to resolve differences with Trump through negotiations.
The Brussels executive added that the Italian leader was one of several EU leaders who spoke to the commission president over the weekend. Von der Leyen then persuaded the US president to delay the tax hikes by more than a month, until July 9. (A2 Televizion)
