At a military school in Kiev, dozens of young men are being trained to become the next generation of their country's soldiers. The Ivan Bohun Military Gymnasium is one of three such institutions in the country and houses hundreds of teenagers preparing to defend their homeland from Russian invasion, writes A2 CNN.
The young men spend two years at this school, where they attend academic classes such as mathematics, physics and history, as well as military training, including the use of weapons, protection against chemical attacks and battle strategy. Their lives are organized with strict discipline, starting from 6:50 in the morning until 21:30 in the evening. In addition to military training, they are allowed to spend Sundays outside of school, visiting families or spending time with friends.
One of the cadets is 16-year-old Yevhen, who dreams of becoming a fighter pilot, following in the footsteps of his family, where generations have served in the military. If he succeeds, he could train next year on F-16 jets donated by the Netherlands and Denmark.
Despite the ongoing risks from Russian airstrikes, the number of applications to this school has quadrupled since 2021. More than half of the students come from military families, while the rest are orphans or children of parents killed in the war.
Since the invasion began on February 24, 2022, 66 former cadets from the school have been killed in battle. However, Yevhen and his comrades are not letting fear stop them. “I will not stay at home and watch everything from afar,” he says, determined to fight for the freedom of his country. (A2 Televizion)
