Egypt accuses Israel of further invading Syria after Assad's ouster

Egypt has condemned what it calls "Israel's further occupation of Syrian lands".

According to foreign media, early on Sunday, the Israeli military said it sent ground forces over the border with Syria into a 155-square-mile demilitarized zone created by a 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement and overseen by the UN.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said it was an attempt to implement a new reality on the ground.

Israel already occupies most of the Golan Heights in southwestern Syria and has done so since seizing the land in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the new troop presence was temporary and limited, writes A2 CNN.

"It's basically close to our borders, sometimes a few hundred yards, sometimes a mile or two miles," he said.

"It is a very limited and temporary step that we have taken for security reasons", he added further, writes A2 CNN.

A senior Israeli official said airstrikes would continue in the coming days, after Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed the military would "destroy heavy strategic weapons throughout Syria." (A2 Televizion)
