Israel launches attacks in Syria after the overthrow of Assad, the Foreign

Israel's foreign minister says his country has struck suspected chemical weapons sites and long-range missiles in Syria.

According to foreign media, Gideon Saar said the attack was carried out to stop weapons falling into the "hands of extremists".

He did not provide additional details about when and where the Israeli attacks took place, A2 CNN writes.

Syria agreed to give up its stockpile of chemical weapons in 2013 after the government was accused of launching an attack near Damascus that killed hundreds of people, but is widely believed to have kept some of the chemical weapons and has been accused of using them again in the following.

We recall that Israeli troops were deployed on Sunday in the UN-monitored defense zone in the Golan Heights, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the action was necessary to protect Israelis, after Syrian forces abandoned their positions.

Many questions remain about who will lead Syria and how the country will try to recover from years of war and nearly five decades under the rule of the Assad family.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement late Sunday that the United States would "closely monitor developments as they unfold and engage with our partners in the region."
