Elon Musk takes control of US Treasury payments

Elon Musk's associates have taken control of the US Treasury Department's payments system, responsible for distributing trillions of dollars in federal funds, a move denounced by Democratic elected officials as "extremely dangerous" and has been the subject of legal action.

"Corruption and waste are being eliminated in real time," claimed the richest man in the world, whom Donald Trump has tasked with leading a commission on "government efficiency" (DOGE), foreign media write.

The Treasury Department's Office of Financial Services' payments system manages the flow of federal funds, including $6 trillion allocated annually for pensions, the Medicare health insurance program, federal employee salaries, and other essential spending.

According to the Washington Post, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant gave his blessing to the acquisition of the payment system, which was only possible after a senior public official was placed on administrative leave for refusing to hand over the keys to the system to Elon Musk's teams. Unions and a human rights organization filed a lawsuit in Washington against the decision.

The lawsuit asks a federal judge to declare it illegal for Musk or other DOGE members to obtain personal information about taxpayers.

"Persons who are required to share information with the federal government should not be required to share it with Elon Musk or his 'DOGE,'" the lawsuit states, writes A2 CNN.

On X, the social media platform he owns, Musk wrote that "the only way to stop fraud and the loss of taxpayer money is to be able to monitor payment flows and block suspicious transactions for investigation."

The American president praised the work of Elon Musk, who, according to him, knows how to "cut costs." "Sometimes we disagree and we won't go where he wants. But I think he's doing a very good job," Trump said, writes A2 CNN. (A2 Televizion)
