"Europe must prepare for war with Russia", expert: It could break out

According to a British military expert, NATO countries could be involved in a military conflict with Russia within two years. The war with Russia could start in the Baltics.

Ed Arnold, a military expert at the British Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), said in an interview with the German news agency dpa that NATO countries should prepare for a military conflict with Russia in 2027.

Regarding Germany's planned massive investments in the armaments sector, Arnold warned that, given the threat from Russia, the German government does not have time to spread the investments over a ten-year period. Instead, the German military, the Bundeswehr, should first focus on rapidly and significantly expanding its reserves of proven weapons systems and ammunition - especially artillery ammunition.

The Bundeswehr must be equipped with heavy equipment

The recommended systems include Taurus missiles, Leopard 2 A8 tanks, and Boxer armored personnel carriers. Both the tanks and the jets are also used by other European countries.

According to the British, the Bundeswehr could "massively increase" their production, equip its own units with heavy equipment and also supply allies.

The best is not always necessary.

Europe should give up the idea of always having the most technologically advanced weapons, Arnold said. "The example of Ukraine shows that you don't always have to have the best."

"The important thing is to be just a little better than your opponent," says the expert. It is also not advisable to spend a lot of money on equipment that, in case of danger, you could lose ten per day.

According to Ed Arnold, there are changes in the way warfare is conducted today. This is related to the use of drones even at the lowest level of combat. Drones are "ubiquitous on the battlefield," said Arnold.

War with Russia could start in the Baltics

If Russia were to deliberately seek to start a conflict, the expert believes it would most likely happen in the Baltics, for example in Suwalki, the only land bridge connecting NATO countries in Central Europe and the Baltic allies. Given the numerous military activities in Europe, Arnold also warned of the possibility that NATO countries and Russia could inadvertently become embroiled in a conflict elsewhere./ DW (A2 Televizion)
