For several weeks, the word "Epstein dossier" has begun to haunt American politics, especially the administration of President Donald Trump, who is facing increasing pressure from his supporters for more transparency on what the investigations into the late financier and convicted pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, contain.
Trump himself has acknowledged that his name is in unclassified documents related to the Epstein investigation, although it is emphasized that the mention does not constitute evidence of any criminal action, and he has not been formally accused of any involvement in Epstein's crimes, writes A2 CNN.
What is the Epstein dossier?
The story begins in 2008, when Epstein reached a plea deal with prosecutors in Florida after the parents of a 14-year-old girl accused him of sexually abusing her. His Palm Beach home was filled with photos of young girls, but he was ultimately convicted of only “recruiting a minor for prostitution” and avoided a serious sentence thanks to the plea deal.
Eleven years later, in 2019, he was again charged with running a ring of underage girls for sexual exploitation. Epstein himself died in prison while awaiting trial, and his death was ruled a suicide.
The investigation involved a large number of documents, including interviews with victims and witnesses, as well as materials seized from his properties. Investigations were also conducted against his associate and former partner, British Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced in 2021 to 20 years in prison for sex trafficking of minors.
What has been made public so far?
Several sets of documents have been released over the years. In January 2024, over 1,400 pages of investigative materials were made public, including statements from Epstein and Maxwell themselves. But these did not reveal any new information about their activities or associates.
After Trump took office in February 2025, the Justice Department and FBI released the first phase of what they called the “declassified Epstein files.” In this 341-page release, much of the information was already known, including flight logs from Epstein’s private jet and a redacted version of his “black book” of contacts, which also included well-known public figures.
In July, the Justice Department and FBI announced that there would be no more new releases, which has disappointed many of President Trump's supporters who are seeking more truth.
Who is mentioned in these files?
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump's name was mentioned in the unclassified documents, which he himself confirmed. The White House has given conflicting messages: spokesman Steven Cheung called it "fake news," while another anonymous official told Reuters that the administration does not dispute that Trump's name is there.
Dozens of well-known figures were named in the documents released in 2024 as friends, associates or even victims of Epstein, including Prince Andrew, former President Bill Clinton and singer Michael Jackson. None of them have been formally charged with any crimes related to Epstein.
Is there a client list?
Speculation about a possible “client list” of Epstein’s criminal network is rife. Many on social media have claimed that a secret document exists containing the names of public figures directly involved in the abuses. However, in July 2025, the Department of Justice and the FBI stated that no such list exists.
However, previous statements by Attorney General Pam Bondi have created confusion. In February, she stated in an interview with Fox News that “the list is on my desk for review.” Her office later clarified that she was referring to the files as a whole and not any specific “client list.”
What do we know about the Trump-Epstein relationship?
Trump and Epstein were friends for several years in the 1990s and early 2000s, frequenting the same elite circles. Trump's name appears in Epstein's "black book" and is mentioned in the flight logs of his plane.
They have been photographed together at several events and Epstein was reportedly invited to Trump's wedding to Marla Maples.
In a 2002 interview, Trump described Epstein as “a wonderful guy.” Trump later said they had cut off contact in the early 2000s, before Epstein’s first arrest. According to the White House, Trump expelled Epstein from his club “for inappropriate behavior.”
The Washington Post, meanwhile, has suggested that the disagreements between them were related to a conflict over property in Florida.
Why is this issue so important?
Many within the MAGA movement believe the US government is covering up the truth about Epstein. Conspiracy theories about a secret network of pedophiles at the highest levels of government have gained popularity, especially after posts from the secretive “Q” account.
Despite the conspiracies, the wider public also seeks answers: why did Epstein receive such a lenient sentence in 2008? Did he act alone or in collaboration with others? How did he manage to kill himself in a maximum-security federal prison?
President Trump, who once promised to reveal everything, is now in a difficult position facing his own supporters who do not believe the official version.
