President Donald Trump spoke Saturday at a conference of American conservatives, boasting about his achievements during the first month of his presidency, a period marked by deep cuts to the federal government and controversy with allies.
In a speech before the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the Washington suburbs, Mr. Trump touted his achievements since taking office on January 20 and criticized his political opponents, including former President Joe Biden, to a standing ovation from the crowd.
An informal poll of attendees during the conference showed continued support for Mr. Trump as he suggests a desire to run for a third term in 2028, which would require a change to the US Constitution.
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution states that "no person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice."
At another event on Thursday, Mr. Trump joked with the audience: "Should I run again? You tell me."
In his first month in office, President Trump has been embroiled in a number of controversies.
He shocked Washington by putting billionaire Elon Musk at the helm of an effort to shrink the federal bureaucracy with staff cuts at many federal agencies.
“Elon is doing a great job,” Mr. Trump said Saturday. “We love Elon, don’t we?”
Mr. Musk told federal employees on Saturday to email the federal government's Office of Personnel Management detailing what they had accomplished in the past week or else face layoffs.
In a social media post earlier Saturday, President Trump said Mr. Musk could do more to reduce waste in government.
"Elon is doing a great job, but I would like to see him become more aggressive. Remember, we have a place to save," he said.
