The leader of the CDU/CSU, who will most likely be the new German chancellor, declared victory on Sunday afternoon.
Friedrich Merz spoke of "a historic election afternoon," as he expressed that he is aware of the responsibility and importance of the task ahead of him.
Merz described the electoral campaign as very difficult, mentioning issues such as economic policies, immigration, foreign policies, but also security policies.
However, the conservative leader added that he is confident that he will be able to form "a government that will serve Germany's interests" very soon.
"The world out there is not waiting for us and for protracted negotiations," he told his party supporters.
To secure a parliamentary majority, Friedrich Merz will need to form a coalition with at least one other party, and this will most likely be the SPD of the outgoing Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
The latter appears to have recorded what is the weakest result in post-war Germany, at around 16 - 16.5 percent.
59.2 million Germans were eligible to vote in these elections. (A2 Televizion)
