"We must never accept the far right," declared German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as he conceded defeat on Sunday afternoon.
Scholz described the result as bittersweet while also acknowledging the scale of the loss for his homeland.
He thanked party members for their commitment to the campaign and congratulated Merz, of the CDU/CSU, in particular, for accepting his task of forming the next government.
Regarding the far-right AfD, Scholz said the SPD has a long history of fighting for democracy, adding the far-right is something "that Germans should never accept." (A2 Televizion)
