NATO will send frigates, patrol aircraft and naval drones to the Baltic Sea to help protect critical infrastructure, while it has the right to act against any suspicious ship that poses a security threat.
This was said by the alliance members on Tuesday, in response to a series of acts of sabotage that have targeted power cables, telecommunications links and underwater gas pipelines.
Finnish police seized a Russian oil tanker last month that they said had damaged the power line between Finland and Estonia, Eastlink 2, and four telecommunications cables while dragging its anchor along the seabed.
Polish state television also reported on Tuesday that a shadowy Russian fleet had been circling the Baltic pipeline that carries gas from Norway to Poland, although there were no reports of damage.
After an 8-party meeting held in Helsinki, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that threats to NATO infrastructure will have consequences. (A2 Televizion)
