German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has clearly opposed US President Trump's plans for the US to take control of the Gaza Strip and displace the Palestinians living there.
Gaza - like the West Bank and East Jerusalem - belongs to the Palestinians, Baerbock said on Wednesday. The population there forms "the starting point for a future state of Palestine . "
"An expulsion of the Palestinian civilian population from Gaza would not only be unacceptable and contrary to international law," Baerbock wrote in a statement without mentioning Trump by name. "It would also lead to new suffering and new hatred."
From the beginning, the G7, the EU and the UN have repeatedly made it clear: "The civilian population of Gaza must not be displaced and Gaza must not be permanently occupied or repopulated" .
The senior German official insists on a two-state solution. Everyone agrees that the badly damaged Gaza Strip must be rebuilt quickly. "We Europeans are ready to do our part together with the US and our partners in the region," the Green politician added.
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed skepticism about Trump's considerations. "All I hear here in the region are concerns," he said during a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman. He tries to choose his words very carefully, said Steinmeier, who made it clear that the region needs a lasting solution.
US President Donald Trump said in Washington in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US wanted to take over the largely destroyed Gaza Strip. Therefore, the approximately two million Palestinians who live there would have to live in other Arab states in the region in the future. The plans have faced some harsh criticism internationally.
The Islamic terrorist organization Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. In the nearly 15-month war between Israel and Hamas, which was sparked by Hamas's brutal attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, much of the coastal strip was destroyed by the Israeli military. A ceasefire has been in effect in the Gaza Strip since January 19. (A2 Televizion)
