18-year-old in Spain hacks NATO and Ministry of Defense data "for fun"

An 18-year-old from a small town in Alicante, Spain, caused "chaos" after hacking into multiple agencies, ministries and companies in the country, and even gained access to NATO's database.

As Spanish police report in a press release, the 18-year-old who was arrested on Tuesday hacked computer services of public and private entities, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education, NATO and US military databases, as well as other international companies.

During the search of his home, police officers discovered more than 50 accounts with various cryptocurrencies and various computer devices, which are being analyzed by experts, who do not rule out that the 18-year-old is also involved in other cybercrimes.

After gaining access to the databases, which contained personal information about employees and customers, as well as classified documents, the 18-year-old sold them or posted them for free on forums.

Spanish police launched the investigation last February after a complaint from a company in Madrid, which identified a post on a forum specializing in data leaks.

According to the complaint, the 18-year-old claimed to have information from the company. Investigating the case, police officers found that not only had data been extracted, but the company's entire system had been compromised.

Regarding the motives that led him to carry out the hacks, the 18-year-old said that he did it "for fun." According to El Pais, he claimed during his testimony that hacking into all these organizations was a "personal challenge" for him. (A2 Televizion)
