The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office has requested a prison sentence of 2 years and 8 months to 7 years and 4 months for the city's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu.
At the same time, the indictment demands that Imamoglu be stripped of his right to hold public office.
The investigation in question concerns statements made by Imamoglu on January 20 to Istanbul prosecutor Akin Gurlek. While on a panel, he criticized the judicial actions against CHP youth leader Cem Aydin.
The charges against the Istanbul mayor are for "threatening", "publicly insulting a public official due to his duties" and "deliberately targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism".
The Republican People's Party (CHP), to which Imamoglu belongs, has denied the allegations. Imamoglu is seen as the main opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and one of the main opposition figures. (A2 Televizion)
