A judge in Colorado decided to allow former President Donald Trump to continue running in the state next year, rejecting a request to disqualify him in connection with the events of January 6, 2021, when his supporters attacked the Capitol.
Although it is expected that the decision of Judge Sarah Wallace will be appealed, it is still considered a victory for Trump who is facing a series of challenges against his candidacy, based on an article of the US Constitution that prohibits taking federal positions by people involved in insurrection or rebellion.
The case in Colorado was brought by a group of voters assisted by the Washington-based organization Citizens for Accountability and Ethics. According to VOA, attorneys for the plaintiff voters argued that former President Trump engaged in sedition by spreading false claims of widespread election fraud after his loss in the 2020 presidential election, and by calling supporters to a rally in Washington and urging them to march to the Capitol, where Congress had assembled to certify the result of the election.
The judge's decision in Colorado can be appealed to the highest court of this state and subsequently to the Supreme Court of the United States, where the majority of judges are conservative, 6 to 3, among them three appointed by former President Trump. (A2 Televizion)
