The European Commission confirms the alarm raised by Ukraine about a Russian plan to destabilize the Western Balkans.

Spokesman Peter Stano was asked about the statements of the leader of Kiev, Volodymyr Zelensky, who called for a lot of attention to be paid to our region as Moscow is investing in making sure that the Balkan countries fight each other.

The EU official said that this is not something new, as Russia's malign attempts to influence the territory of the Western Balkans have long been denounced.

"We are on the same line as the president of Ukraine. We know that Russia is doing everything it can to sow discontent, political instability, foreign interference and information manipulation. That's why we are currently increasing our cooperation and assistance in the partners in the Western Balkans when it comes to strengthening the capacities and abilities to face this form of hybrid threats and external interference," stated Peter Stano, spokesperson of the European Commission  .

The spokesperson of the European Commission refused to give details, as he said, the information exchanged with partners is not made public, especially for sensitive issues.

"However, we have information on this matter. For a long time we have carefully observed these activities from Russia. We are in full unison and aware of what Russia is trying to do and we are working very hard with our partners in the Western Balkans to equip them with the capabilities to deal with them." , continued Stano.
