Hamas rejects Israeli ceasefire proposal

Hamas has rejected an Israeli proposal for a six-week ceasefire in Gaza, which would have required the armed group to lay down its weapons, during which ten live hostages and 16 dead hostages would be released. The news was reported by the BBC, citing a "senior Palestinian source".

At the same time, Hamas announced that an "important announcement" from the military spokesman of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida, will be published soon on its Telegram channel.

The source reported that "the Israeli proposal, transmitted to Hamas via Egypt, included a clear call for the fundamentalist organization to disarm, without any Israeli commitment to end the war, or to withdraw IDF forces from the Gaza Strip, which were demanded by Hamas."

Hamas rejected the proposal outright, while saying it had "lost contact" with the group holding Israeli-American Idan Alexander hostage after an IDF raid.

This decision by Hamas comes as Israel continues its military offensive in Gaza.

A security guard was killed and nine others were wounded in an airstrike on a field hospital in Khan Younis, the hospital said. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not immediately comment.

A UN agency meanwhile warned that "the humanitarian situation in Gaza is now the worst it has been in the 18 months since the outbreak of hostilities."
