Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has mocked an ambitious new plan among EU countries to spend huge additional sums on defence, saying it could "destroy Europe".
According to foreign media, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says a proposal called REARM Europe could "mobilize" up to 800 billion euros.
But Orban, speaking on state radio this morning, said: “If the US now gives up funding the war, why would the other 26 EU member states have a chance to see this war through to the end?”
"Today it seems that I have vetoed it. But within weeks they will return and it will turn out that there is no money for these purposes," Orban continued.
He added that the way in which the EU wants to support Ukraine, while also increasing Europe's defense spending, would "destroy Europe."
Orban, who has refused to send weapons to Ukraine since the start of the war and has maintained close relations with Moscow, said that instead of prolonging the war, Europe should support Donald Trump's peace talks. (A2 Televizion)
