US tariffs of 50% on steel and aluminum take effect

The Trump administration's new 50% tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from the rest of the world went into effect at midnight local time.

The US president's trade war is escalating in a move that is expected to fuel tensions with the country's major economic partners.

Trump signed the executive order yesterday increasing these tariffs from 25% to 50%, writes A2 CNN.

The move raises import taxes on metals, key inputs in everything from cars to canned foods, for the second time since March.

According to Trump, the measures, which take effect on Wednesday, are intended to secure the future of the American steel industry, reports A2 CNN.

However, critics say the protections could wreak havoc on steel producers outside the U.S., trigger retaliation from trading partners and come at a punitive cost to American users of the metal. (A2 Televizion)
