At least 20 people have died after a mosque collapsed in Myanmar after a powerful earthquake struck the Southeast Asian country on Friday, with three people reported dead in Bangkok. Rescue workers are searching the rubble where an unknown number of people are believed to be trapped.
The military junta that has ruled Myanmar since a coup in 2021 has declared a state of emergency in the regions of Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Easter Shan and Naypyidaw.
According to local media reports, it has appealed for international assistance. Officials will investigate the damage and begin coordinating rescue efforts in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey has issued a red alert for casualties and damage after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar.
