Extreme heat causes casualties in Italy and France, alarm in many cities

The record heat wave that has hit Italy and much of Europe with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees has claimed its first victims in the neighboring country. Italian media reports that four people have died due to the extreme heat; two victims in Sardinia, one in Lombardy and another in Liguria.

A 70-year-old truck driver was found dead in his vehicle parked on the A4 motorway, between Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda, in the province of Brescia. According to initial reconstructions, he suffered a heart attack and it cannot be ruled out that high temperatures contributed to the fatal illness, writes A2 CNN.

The extreme heat will continue for the next 3 days and authorities in Italy have issued the maximum heat risk alert for 18 cities.

Meanwhile, the situation is different in Tuscany, where the intense heat has given way to storms and hail that, according to forecasts, may occur again in the coming days, reports A2 CNN.

Meanwhile in France, a 10-year-old American girl, originally from the state of Virginia, died of a heart attack, possibly due to heatstroke.

The little girl was on vacation with her family in the area of the Palace of Versailles. While walking in the courtyard of the historic residence, the little girl suffered a heart attack. Despite the timely intervention of firefighters and emergency medical services, rescue teams were unable to save her, reports A2 CNN.

On Wednesday evening, the heat gave way to storms in parts of France. However, temperatures remain high in some departments.

The heat wave is not yet completely over. 17 departments remain on orange alert this Thursday, July 3, and according to French media, the alert has been extended until Friday. (A2 Televizion)
