Turkey-Libya Memorandum on Maritime Zones, Egypt Asks Washington to Intervene

Egypt appears to have engaged in a diplomatic marathon to prevent the ratification of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum by the Tobruk Parliament, with Greece closely monitoring developments, as next Sunday Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis will visit Tripoli and Benghazi.

According to foreign media, an Egyptian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Middle East Eye website today that Cairo is deeply concerned that if the eastern Libyan Parliament ratifies the agreement that was initially signed in 2019 by the country's Western-backed government, tensions could rise in the Eastern Mediterranean, at a time when Egypt is dealing with the consequences of the conflicts in Gaza and Sudan.

According to the same source, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati raised the issue of US intervention in a phone call with Massad Boulos, the White House's senior adviser on Africa, last month. Boulos said he would contact Khalifa Haftar, the de facto leader of eastern Libya, to discuss the issue, the sources said, writes A2 CNN.

Several Libyan media outlets are reporting that Libya's eastern parliament is likely to ratify the 2019 maritime delimitation agreement, which recognizes Turkey's claim to an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in large parts of the Eastern Mediterranean. Libya's eastern parliament, based in Tobruk, is effectively under the control of Haftar, who has been supported on and off by various regional "players" since 2011, including the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Egypt, France, and Russia.
