Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu's path to running against Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the post of President of Turkey has been definitively closed.
Imamoglu faced charges of " falsifying official documents " regarding his diploma, and this Tuesday the city's university announced that the diplomas of 28 people, including the mayor of Istanbul, have been revoked.
Imamoglu was facing charges based on a report prepared by the Higher Education Council of Turkey (YOK), according to which his transfer in 1990 to Istanbul University's School of Business Administration was not legal and therefore his degree should be annulled.
Current developments do not allow him to be a candidate for the country's Presidency, as having a higher education degree is a prerequisite for entering the race for this position.
The University's announcement, among other things, states that "according to the findings of the "Research Report" of the Presidium of the Supervisory Council of Higher Education and the report compiled by the Research Commission assigned to this institution, for individuals who have been irregularly transferred to the English language program of the School of Business Administration of our University (the report of graduates mentioned in 1990) the Supervisory Council of Higher Education, as well as the graduations and diplomas that these persons have received based on these decisions will be revoked and canceled for "absence" and "clear errors" .
The announcement further states that "the decision taken and all data and documents that constitute the basis of this decision will be urgently sent to the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office and the Presidency of the Council of Higher Education . " (A2 Televizion)
