US President Donald Trump has nominated right-wing commentator Dan Bongino as deputy director of the FBI, A2 CNN reports. Trump wrote on social media that Bongino is "a man with extraordinary love and passion for our country" and will serve under newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel.
The 50-year-old has worked for the New York Police Department and the Secret Service - as well as being part of the protection team for two presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
He hosts a podcast of his own name, whose Facebook posts often attract more attention than those of Fox News and CNN combined. “Thank you Mr. President, Attorney General Bondi, and Director Patel,” Bongino wrote on X in a post after Trump’s announcement.
Trump said in his social media announcement Sunday that Bongino is "ready and prepared to give up" his podcast "to serve." "Justice, Law and Order will be restored to America, and soon," Trump added. He said Bongino would do a "tremendous" job at the FBI.
Bongino, who has run for Congress three times, had invited Trump on his daily podcast, The Dan Bongino Show, before last year's election.
Episodes of his program over the past week include headlines like “Trump Keeps Delivering Results and Liberals Are Going Crazy” and “The Only Category of People Who Love Crime Are Criminals!!!”.
Speaking about his career as a conservative political commentator, Bongino said in 2018: “My life now is all about ‘making liberals crazy.’” With his combative style, Bongino often debates Trump critics, including horror writer Stephen King.
Bongino's new FBI boss, Patel, was narrowly confirmed by the Senate last week to lead the law enforcement agency, which he has long criticized. Democrats had warned that he would seek revenge against Trump's enemies, though the former prosecutor has denied any plans to pursue political vendettas and has promised to "rebuild" the bureau.
