Tragedy looms in mid-air, two planes avoid head-on collision at 10,000 meters

A potentially catastrophic air incident occurred over the airspace of the Republic of Tuva, a mountainous region in southern Siberia, near the border with Mongolia. Two Chinese planes, an Air China passenger plane and an SF Airlines cargo plane, came within striking distance of each other, threatening a head-on collision that would have killed hundreds of people.

Air China flight CA967 was en route from Shanghai Pudong to Milan Malpensa Airport, a route that usually carries many European and Italian passengers. The other plane, an SF Airlines cargo plane with registration number O3-128, was en route from Budapest to the Chinese city of Ezhou, A2 CNN reports.

According to preliminary data, the planes were at a vertical distance of only 90 to 120 meters – while in these cases, the safety distance should be several hundred meters. It is suspected that the Air China flight rose to a new altitude without authorization from Russian air traffic control.

Fortunately, the pilots and controllers reacted quickly, avoiding a collision in the last seconds. Russian and Chinese authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether human or technological error was the cause. (A2 Televizion)
