Iran: US will be held responsible if Israel attacks its nuclear facilities

The United States will be held legally responsible if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear facilities, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday.

Araqchi reacted after CCN reported that Israel may be preparing to carry out attacks on Iran.

Iran and the US, Israel's biggest ally, will hold the fifth round of nuclear talks on Friday in Rome.

Washington says Iran's uranium enrichment could be used to develop nuclear bombs, but Tehran denies this.

Citing intelligence sources, CNN reported on Tuesday that it is not yet clear whether Israel has made a final decision on any military action, and that US officials have differing opinions on whether the Israelis will ultimately decide to attack Iran.

"Iran strongly warns the Zionist regime of Israel against any adventure. And, [we] will respond decisively to any threat or illegal action by this regime," Araqchi said in a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Araqchi said that Iran would consider Washington a "participant" in any such attack, and that Tehran would be forced to take "special measures" to protect its nuclear facilities and materials if the threats persist.

According to him, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will then be notified of these steps.

Although Araqchi did not indicate what measures were being considered, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader said in April that Tehran could suspend cooperation with the IAEA or transfer enriched material to secure, undisclosed locations.

In a statement released on Thursday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned that Israel would face a "devastating and decisive response" if it attacks Iran.

"They are trying to scare us with war, but they are miscalculating because they are not aware of the powerful popular and military support that the Islamic republic can mobilize in war conditions," said Guards spokesman Alimohammad Naini.

The failure of US-Iran talks or a new nuclear deal that does not address Israeli concerns about Iran developing nuclear weapons through enrichment could prompt Israel to attack its main regional enemy, diplomats say.

On Tuesday, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the US was "overdoing" its demand that Tehran halt uranium enrichment. He even expressed doubts about whether talks on a new nuclear deal would succeed.

Tehran insists its nuclear energy program is exclusively for civilian purposes.

Iran and Israel have been involved in direct exchanges of fire last year, in April and October, raising the risk of a regional conflict./ REL (A2 Televizion)
