A court in Tbilisi has found former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili guilty of illegally crossing the border and sentenced him to four and a half years in prison. With the verdict, Saakashvili faces a total sentence of 12 and a half years in prison, which will keep him behind bars until April 1, 2034.
Saakashvili, who has been in prison since 2021, strongly condemned this decision, saying that it aims to physically destroy him and eliminate him as a threat to political opponents, emphasizing that the freedom and ideas he supports cannot be destroyed even if he dies.
“This decision is an attempt to destroy me in prison. They are trying to eliminate my spirit and the idea of freedom for Georgia,” Saakashvili said. He said that, despite everything, he and his supporters will continue to fight for freedom and will triumph.
Saakashvili, who had been in exile for several years, secretly returned to Georgia on September 29, 2021. After being arrested two days later, he was charged with illegal border crossing, a charge that is one of many court proceedings against him. (A2 Televizion)
