They had left for the Canary Islands of Spain, 6 immigrants drowned

At least six migrants have died trying to reach Spain's Canary Islands on unsafe boats from West Africa, emergency services and the Red Cross said on Wednesday.

Five of the 65 migrants who arrived on the small island of El Hierro overnight by open boat were found dead, emergency services said.

Another migrant was found dead in one of three other boats that were rescued by the Spanish coast guard.

For the second time in a row, the number of immigrants going to the Canary Islands of Spain will mark a record increase in 2024.

The number of migrants who disappear or die en route is growing five times faster than the number of those who arrive alive, the latest data shows.

Sailing across the Atlantic is particularly dangerous, as bad weather can easily sink the fragile boats and dinghies that migrants use most.

About 20,000 irregular immigrants have arrived in El Hierro so far this year, according to the Red Cross./ REL (A2 Televizion)
