The United States will work with partners and stakeholders in Syria to help and manage the risk, US President Joe Biden said on Sunday after rebel fighters overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
In a speech at the White House, Biden said the United States would support Syria's neighbors during the transition period and appreciate the efforts and actions of rebel groups.
"After 13 years of civil war in Syria, more than half a century of authoritarian rule by Bashar al-Assad and his father before him, rebel forces have forced Assad to resign from office and leave the country. We are not sure where it is, but we are aware that it is in Moscow. Finally, the Assad regime has fallen. As we all turn to the question of what comes next, the United States will work with our partners and stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage the risks," Biden said.
Further, Biden did not forget to mention that those who overthrew Assad were once terrorists and abused human rights, which is why Biden wants attention.
"We will be vigilant. Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that toppled Assad have their own grim records of terrorism and human rights abuses. We have taken into account the statements of the leaders of these rebel groups in the last few days and they are saying the right things now. But as they take on greater responsibilities, we will appreciate not only their words, but their actions," the president added.
The US, analysts say, should think about how to deal with the current leader of the rebels, Abu Mohammed al-Jaulani, who was once part of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda and later of the Islamic State, ISIS.
Meanwhile, according to Iranian sources, Bashar al-Assad has not asked his ally for help in recent days.
"We have never been asked for help," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on state television. It would have been the Syrian army's job to repel the Islamist offensive, which ultimately led to Assad's downfall. According to international media, Asaad is in Moscow, something that Joe Biden has also confirmed. (A2 Televizion)
