France will be Europe's nuclear umbrella in the face of the Russian threat. This fact was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron in a speech to the nation. The speech was clearly directed at European countries, mentioning and warning the fact that Europe must face the threat from Russia.
"Our nuclear deterrence protects us: it is complete, sovereign, French to the end. But, responding to the historic call of the future German Chancellor, I have decided to open the strategic debate on the protection of our allies on the European continent through our (nuclear) deterrence. The whole matter will remain in the hands of the French President," Macron said.
German Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz has questioned whether NATO will remain in its "current form" until June and has defended talks with France and Britain on an expansion of their nuclear defenses. France's nuclear deterrence strategy has so far been defensive and aimed at protecting the country's vital interests.
In his televised address, Macron also said France would have to spend more on defense and would continue to help Ukraine. He acknowledged voters' concerns about Russia and the new U.S. administration's subversion of the international order.
"You are, legitimately, concerned about current events, which are disrupting the world order. Russia has become a threat to France and Europe, to watch and do nothing would be madness,"
Emmanuel Macron added.
For her part, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused French President Emmanuel Macron of being out of touch with reality after he called Russia a threat to Europe and said he would consider placing European allies under nuclear protection.
"Every day he makes some completely unrealistic statement that contradicts the previous ones. "He is a storyteller," Zakharova said. (A2 Televizion)
