The Trump administration is planning to import millions of eggs from Turkey and South Korea and is in talks with other countries, in an "operation" to lower all-time high prices for this product for the American consumer.
"We're talking about hundreds of millions of eggs in the short term," Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told reporters at the White House, as she unveiled a $1 billion plan to combat a bird flu epidemic that has forced American farmers to cull tens of millions of chickens.
Despite President Trump's campaign promise to lower prices, the cost of eggs has increased more than 65% over the past year and is projected to increase by 41% in 2025.
Rollins said her department was also in talks with other countries to secure egg supplies, but did not specify which regions.
Polish and Lithuanian poultry associations said on Friday they had been contacted by US embassies about potential egg exports.
In February, the US Department of Agriculture unveiled a $1 billion, five-point plan to address egg prices, with a budget of $500 million for biosecurity measures, approximately $100 million for vaccine research and development, and $400 million for farmer financial assistance programs.
The Trump administration said it will provide commercial egg farms with best practices and free consulting services and pay up to 75% of costs to help prevent the spread of bird flu. (A2 Televizion)
