US President-elect Donald Trump will not go to jail or pay a fine for his criminal conviction in connection with paying adult movie star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence. The American court decided on Friday, the unconditional sentence of Donald Trump, but without jailing him.
Judge Juan Merchan's sentencing of Trump came over his bid to retake the White House just days before his Jan. 20 inauguration. By granting an unconditional discharge, Merchan would place a guilty verdict on Trump's permanent record — without any other legal penalties such as jail time, fines or probation. Trump pleaded not guilty and has vowed to appeal the guilty verdict. He appeared with his lawyer on television screens in the courtroom with two American flags in the background.
"It's been a political witch hunt," Trump said before the sentencing. "It was done to damage my reputation in order to lose the election and it obviously didn't work." I'm completely innocent, I've done nothing wrong," Trump said.
Now that Trump has been convicted, he is free to pursue an appeal, a process that could take years and play out while he serves a four-year term as president. Trump fought hard to avoid the spectacle of having to appear before a state-level judge so close to when he will be sworn into office. The US Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a last-minute bid by Trump to stop it.
In May, Trump became the first US president ever to be convicted of a crime when a jury found him guilty of falsifying business records to cover up a potential sex scandal before his first presidential victory in 2016 .
