The US will revoke US visas for students from China. The news was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement to the media. "Among the Chinese students there are those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The US State Department will cooperate with the Department of Homeland Security to continuously revoke visas for Chinese students," said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The US will also review current visa criteria to more closely scrutinize all future visa applications from China and Hong Kong. China is the second-largest source country for international students to the US, after India. In the 2023/24 academic year, more than 270,000 students came from China, representing about a quarter of all international students in the United States.

The move comes at a time when relations between U.S. higher education and China are under increasing scrutiny. House Republicans this month called on Duke University to sever ties with a Chinese university because it was giving Chinese students access to U.S. government-funded research at Duke.

The Department of Homeland Security raised similar concerns in a letter last week about Harvard University’s exclusion of international students. Secretary Kristi Noem accused Harvard of “collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party” and pointed to research collaborations with Chinese scientists. She also accused Harvard of training members of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a Chinese paramilitary group.

The latest announcement came a day after Rubio suspended new visa interview appointments for international students while the department prepares guidelines for greater scrutiny of their social media activity. (A2 Televizion)
