Authorities in El Salvador announced the seizure of 1,300 kilograms of cocaine, worth $33 million, during a naval operation.
The operation led to the capture of three suspected drug traffickers who were traveling in a semi-submarine, A2 CNN reports. Officials presented the drugs and the detainees at a press conference in San Salvador.
"Throughout the administration of President Nayib Bukele, 69 tons of various drugs, mainly cocaine, have been seized, which in economic terms amount to 1619 million dollars," said Minister of National Defense, Rene Francis Merino Monroy.
Drug trafficking remains one of the biggest security challenges in El Salvador and the Central American region. The country is located along a strategic route that connects South America to major consumer markets in the United States. Government efforts to curb this activity include regular naval operations and special anti-narcotics forces. However, the trafficking networks are sophisticated and use advanced technology, including artisanal submarines. (A2 Televizion)
