An Israeli airstrike destroyed parts of Al-Ahli Hospital, the last hospital still functioning in Gaza City.
Witnesses said the bombings had destroyed intensive care and surgical wards, while videos posted online showed flames and smoke rising into the sky after rockets hit the two-story building, A2 writes.
Dozens of people, including hospitalized patients, as well as women and children sheltering in the hospital courtyard, were seen running away from the hit area. According to the Civil Emergency Services in Gaza, there were no casualties as a result of the attack. The Israeli Defense Forces claim to have targeted the hospital because it housed a command and control center used by Hamas.
As stated in a statement, the IDF has taken all steps to minimize harm to civilians, including issuing warnings in the area, using high-precision munitions and aerial surveillance.
A local journalist working at the hospital said the IDF had called a doctor who was operating in the emergency room and asked him to evacuate the hospital immediately. “You have 20 minutes to leave,” the journalist quoted the Israeli Defense Forces as warning.
In a statement, Hamas condemned the attack, calling it a "horrific crime." Nearly 51,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, over 1,500 of them since March 18, when Israel resumed the offensive after a several-week ceasefire.
