Kiev wakes up to alarm sirens, Russia attacks with hypersonic Iskander missiles

At least two civilians were killed and several others wounded Friday morning in a heavy wave of Russian shelling in the Ukrainian capital and the southern Kherson region.

Sirens were sounded across Ukraine to warn of airstrikes for several hours. Russia fired eight missiles — including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and Iskander/KN-23 ballistic missiles — at Kiev alone, said the head of Kiev's military administration, Serhiy Popko.

Kherson has also been affected by massive bombardment by Russian artillery, which has hit residential buildings, critical infrastructures have been damaged, electricity has been knocked out in some areas of the city, the city's electric transport and traffic lights have been damaged.

"In response to the actions of the Kiev regime, supported by its Western sponsors, this morning a collective strike with long-range high-precision weapons was carried out on the intelligence control center (SBU), the design bureau in Kiev Luch, which designs and manufactures the Neptun missile system, as well as the positions of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system," the Russian ministry announced.

The Russian Ministry of Defense recalled that on December 18, a missile attack was launched from the territory of Ukraine against the Kamensky factory (which produces ammunition) in the Rostov region with six American-made Atacms missiles and four British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

Friday's bombings followed a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who on Thursday suggested a "high-tech duel" over Kiev to prove that Russia's new hypersonic ballistic missile, called the Oreshnik, cannot be destroyed by defenses air supplied by the West. (A2 Televizion)
