China has unveiled its first new-generation amphibious assault ship, bolstering a rapidly developing navy to rival the military might of the United States.
The 076-class ship, named Sichuan after the southwestern Chinese province, was launched during a ceremony in Shanghai, the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) announced. Described as a "key asset," it aims to improve long-range operational capabilities and accelerate the transformation of China's navy.
With a full displacement of over 40,000 tons, the Sichuan is one of the largest ships of its type in the world. It includes a double superstructure and a full runway, while the main innovation is the electromagnetic catapult system. This system allows the ship to launch heavier aircraft, increasing their operational range and capacity to carry more weapons.
According to the PLAN, Sichuan can operate both helicopters and drones. China possesses an advanced drone arsenal, including GJ-11 stealth drones and WZ-7 reconnaissance drones, making this ship a powerful platform for unmanned air operations.
In addition, the ship can carry helicopters and troop landing craft, supporting over 1,000 Marines. Compared to its predecessor, the 075-class ship, and other ships such as those of the US or Japan, the 076 offers greater capacity for amphibious operations and expeditions.
Military analysts see the development as evidence of China's naval empowerment and its intention to project influence beyond its borders while challenging US naval supremacy. (A2 Televizion)
