Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that Moscow will not stop fighting in Ukraine until it achieves what it seeks through negotiations to end the war, which have been initiated by the presidents of the US and Russia.
"We will not stop hostilities until these negotiations reach a clear and sustainable result that suits the Russian Federation," Lavrov told reporters during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Ankara.
Moscow is demanding the surrender of the Ukrainian military and is demanding that Kiev hand over five provinces within its territory that are fully or partially controlled by Russian forces. At the same time, Russia wants Ukraine to commit to not joining NATO and to have a new government.
"Both sides should participate in the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia," said Turkish top diplomat Hakan Fidan.
"As we enter the fourth year of the war today, we attach great importance to the new American initiative. We believe that a solution can be found through negotiations in which both sides will participate. Turkey is always ready to take on the role of mediator. Our goal is to end this devastating war as soon as possible and to close the wounds in the region," he stressed.
Turkey, although a NATO member, has maintained its ties with Moscow and Kiev since the beginning of the war. It provides drones to the Ukrainians but has not endorsed sanctions against Russia imposed by the West. (A2 Televizion)
