A car has deliberately exploded in Amsterdam's Dam Square, with the driver jumping out of the vehicle as it was engulfed in flames.

Shocking footage shows a red car slowly driving towards the crowd and exploding at around 1:30 p.m. Seconds later, the 50-year-old Dutch driver is seen getting out of the car engulfed in flames, before being put out with a fire extinguisher and arrested.

Fortunately, no pedestrians were injured, but the driver suffered serious injuries.

Amsterdam police said the explosion was deliberate and it is suspected that the driver wanted to commit suicide by using a flammable substance inside the car. Explosives experts are investigating the car to understand the exact circumstances of the incident.

This event occurred just a few days after a brutal knife attack in the same square.

A 30-year-old man from Donetsk, Ukraine, injured five people last Thursday before being stopped by a British tourist. The Briton, who has remained anonymous, tackled the attacker to the ground and held him until police arrived.

The five victims were an American couple, a Pole, a Belgian and a 19-year-old girl from Amsterdam. Four of them are still in hospital but are in stable condition. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema thanked the Briton for his heroic action and awarded him the city's "heldenspeld" medal. (A2 Televizion)
