"We are not leaving NATO," Rubio pressures allies to increase defense

The United States will never leave NATO. This is what US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during his visit to Brussels for the meeting of foreign ministers of the North Atlantic Alliance countries. Rubio was received at the meeting by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"As we speak, right now, the United States is more active in NATO than it has been before. And the hysteria that I see in the global media and domestic media in the US, regarding NATO, is misplaced. President Trump has made it clear that he supports NATO. We will stay in NATO," said the US Secretary of State.

Rubio added that Trump " was not against NATO ." " He is against a NATO that does not have the capabilities it needs to fulfill the obligations that the treaty imposes on each member state ," he added.

Rubio's idea was also reinforced by NATO chief Mark Rutte, who sought to reassure European allies that Washington would remain committed to the Western military alliance, despite harsh words from President Donald Trump.

European ministers are expected to use the meeting to outline their plans to boost defense spending. According to NATO estimates, 23 of the alliance's 32 members met or exceeded the 2% target last year. Some of the continent's big economies, such as Italy and Spain, were among those below the target, at around 1.5% and 1.3% respectively.

European ministers are also likely to use the meeting to try to influence talks Trump has initiated with Russia over the war in Ukraine, which was triggered by Moscow's invasion in 2022. (A2 Televizion)
